Lives and works in Friesland. I work from the idea “From the fire of the earth”. The work is built up with materials from the Wadden Sea: mud, seaweed, rope, shells, etc. The underlayers are painted in red, the fire of the earth.

My love goes out to the Wadden Sea with its changing tides, the gullies, the mud, the islands. In my work I want viewers to experience and feel the endless horizon, the freedom, billowing sails and the sensation of wind in your hair and salt on your lips.

Harmen H. Westra: from Vlindertuin to Vlindertuin

In 2002 the residential care/nursing home where I work as a technician was one of the first to get a butterfly garden (Vlindertuin), funded by the VSBFonds. This was also the period when digital photography was on the rise.

Since then, my camera has become indispensable. The butterfly garden got me hooked on photography and I started capturing the butterflies and flowers. After that came landscape photography.

I lived near the Wadden area, which became a place for me to take photographs. Capturing the Wadden area in my own way: pure! The Wadden material (wood) that I found on my trips I took home and used to present my photos in.

Nowadays I also present my work on various photo papers, forex, MDF, in wood and still in finds from nature. My first teacher was Ton Aartsen, visual artist. He taught me to look and to move with the camera. Ton: “Walk towards the subject and around it, look, and then take the photo.” My other teacher was Gijs van Gent, a photojournalist for renowned daily newspapers and a street photographer. Gijs van Gent taught me to experiment and to get my teeth into the subject until the photographic image is right.

Now my photographic work is crossing the Wadden Sea to hang in De Vlindertuin. From Vlindertuin to Vlindertuin, how wonderful is that!

Boukje Westra-Wijnja (passed away in July 2021)

This creative talent has now offered 35 works for exhibition at De Vlindertuin. “My themes are impressions of what I see and feel at the Wadden Sea, the sea, landscape, flowers, animals and people.” Themes that also fit seamlessly with the vision of this holiday business.

Boukje was born in Mantgum and had lived in the meadows of Blije since 1982. She says: “Ameland is an island I always come back to. It has everything I care about: the Wadden Sea, the sea, the dunes and the seals.” From the age of 16 she came to the island regularly: summer camp, holiday work at Hotel Noordzee and as a hostess on the excursion boat de Waddentravel. Through this she became friends with the Mosterman family. “In 2011 Joke and Theo Mosterman commissioned me to make two paintings and a mural in the breakfast room on the theme of Butterflies.” More commissions on the same theme followed. Appartementen De Vlindertuin is also a gallery. “What could be better for an artist than to show your work and offer it for sale in a place where you feel at home?”

Suzan Bosch - transition artist

She works as an independent transition artist, with nature as her source of inspiration. “Every aspect of nature has beauty and function, and is connected to the greater whole. That touches me, and I try to translate it into my art, also in light of the challenges of our time.”

She combines her background as an organisational psychologist with her artistic fascination for everything to do with natural fibres and colour nuances. Her work is about the power of nature, about time, attention and connection. It invites you to look differently at what is self-evident and what seems unfamiliar.

She turns handmade paper from plant materials, plant-dyed wool and botanically printed textiles into works of art that reflect the relationship between the client and their surroundings. For projects in government, education and care, as a Connecting Artist she involves groups dealing with transition and renewal in making art. She then uses her natural materials and artisanal working processes as a means of participation and co-creation. In this way she lets participants experience what space, time and attention do to human relationships, and invites them to make new connections.

She is regularly invited to give an inspiring talk or poetic presentation and to tell about her art of natural renewal.

On her own website suzanbosch.com you can read more about her activities.

Anneke Veldkamp

My name is Anneke Veldkamp, and I started painting because of my daughter Sjanne. She has painted since she was a child, and we always wondered where she got her talent from. One evening I simply went painting with her and discovered that I really enjoy it. It's also wonderfully relaxing. Since then I've been a fan, and I take a workshop now and then, but mostly I paint at home in my “studio”.

Together with Sjanne, I made the painting with Ben the dog. It actually turned into a bit of a mixed media painting, because 2 butterflies are glued onto it. Sjanne also painted the painting with the ladybird. I'm self-taught, but I have since taken workshops and these days I often paint in oils. The paintings hanging in De Vlindertuin are mainly painted in acrylics, except for the young sparrow, which was painted in oils.

My style is to set things up quickly and then finish them a bit more precisely, and I'm still trying out all sorts of things. That also goes for the subjects of my paintings. In De Vlindertuin you'll mainly find birds, butterflies and other animals, but I actually paint everything: still lifes, abstracts and nowadays portraits too.

Ben van Doorn

He is a teacher at the Dockinga College in Ferwert and is also active as a visual artist. I studied at Ubbo Emmius and Academie Minerva. In the past I made many wall and ceiling paintings commissioned by Heineken. But I also had my own course centre, atelier de Brêge in Metslawier. Now I spend more time in front of the class and still take on a commission now and then. That can vary greatly, from free commissions, portrait drawing, drawings for a gravestone so the stonemason can engrave them on the stone, murals etc. etc.

If reading all this has made you curious and you'd like to know more about the drawing and painting courses: feel free to call 0511 424106 for information without obligation.

2. Workshops on presentation of the discount voucher from the art month booklet.

3. Extra works hang in all communal areas especially for the art month.
