The Horse Marathon is a spectacular two-day carriage driving competition organised by the Amelander Men- en Rijvereniging. Drivers compete with their horse-and-carriage teams on a challenging course with various obstacles. In the open island landscape, the skill and stamina of driver, groom and horse are put to a real test.
At the obstacles the action comes up close: tight bends, water crossings and technical sections deliver adrenaline for the participants and thrills for the spectators, who can watch from the sidelines for free. It is a sporty and traditional weekend event that suits Ameland's rich equestrian past and draws both islanders and tourists.
